The pump itself is nothing special β a pretty old Victorian pump β but in the middle of the 19 th century it became the scene of one of the biggest breakthroughs in modern medicine when the physician John Snow realised that an outbreak of cholera in Soho was geographically centred around the public water pump.
This led to the discovery that water could be a carrier of disease, and had a huge impact on public health and waste management. Keep your eyes peeled when walking around Soho and you might just spot a life-sized nose poking out of one of the buildings.
