Time was when weaving essays together from scholars and journalists into one book, as this volume has done, might have seemed contrived if not illadvised. In the early s, a common faculty view was that popularizing research for the public amounted to dumbing down complex ideas. And, some said, why talk readily to journalists and be victimized by error-prone, supercial reporting? Academics like Harvey Cox, Martin Marty, and Elaine Pagels were the exceptions who kept avenues open to popular media without damaging their academic standing.
